eposter TAHNIAH DR SITI KHAIRIZAN RAHIM PENAJA PFIZER INCThe objective of this project is to explore the impact of volunteer-integrated palliative care home visit service on the psychological well-being and quality of life of patients with metastatic breast cancer and their dedicated caregivers. Most of the cancer treatment centers in Malaysia did not provide home visit service at the community due to limited resource. Palliative Unit Pusat Perubatan USM Bertam (PPUSMB) has been providing palliative home visit service since the past 10 years and recently integrating volunteers.

Meanwhile the Conquer Cancer and Pfizer Global Medical Grants offering funding to projects that are aimed at addressing relevant gaps in the care that contribute to disparities in metastatic breast cancer patient outcomes in Southeast Asia. This project has been selected to receive the grant to aid in the project implementation to increase palliative care accessibility in North Malaysia. However, the grant will not influence the professional decision regarding the conduct of the study procedure or report of this study.

The target populations are 100 patients with metastatic breast cancer and 100 dedicated caregivers from Penang and Kedah that will receive volunteer-integrated palliative care home visit for 12 weeks. Palliative team and volunteers will aid in addressing psychosocial care for both patients and caregivers. The psychological wellbeing and the quality of life of both patients and caregivers will be analysed from baseline and after intervention by using sets of validated questionnaires.

At the end of this project, PPUSMB envision the improvement of access to the palliative care service in north Malaysia especially in the rural area following recruitment of volunteers and training of palliative nurses in psychosocial care. This collaboration will influence the development of Palliative care for metastatic breast cancer patients and their caregivers locally and will be shared with other palliative care providers across Malaysia to promote wider adoption.
