The proposed study focuses on developing a new treatment for osteoarthritis (OA), a condition that affects millions worldwide, particularly women post-menopause and those who are obese. OA is not a trivial health issue; it can cause severe joint pain and disability, significantly impacting one’s quality of life, well-being, and economic status. Traditional treatments are temporary and often require repeated procedures. To address this, a gradient scaffold mimics natural bone and cartilage will be fabricated using materials such as akermanite ceramics, multi-doped carbonated hydroxyapatite (CHA), hyaluronic acid, and collagen type I. These scaffolds are engineered to provide the necessary mechanical strength and promote new tissue formation, ultimately resorbing harmlessly into the body. By collaborating with Nottingham Trent University, UK, an advanced 3D in vitro co-culture technology will be used to study the interaction of these scaffolds with human mesenchymal stem cells to facilitate the simultaneous healing of bone and cartilage. This intelligent strategy aims to offer a one-time surgical solution, reducing the need for repeated treatments and lowering healthcare costs. By producing these scaffolds locally, we can also decrease reliance on expensive imported products, providing a cost-effective and efficient treatment and offering millions a chance for a more active, pain-free life.
